How’s your geography?

You have to hand it to Lufthansa USA for even considering this test for Americans! Presumably it is designed to graphically demonstrate to (most of) them just how stupid they really are when it comes to matters of European geography.

I tried four times and got roughly the same score each time, the best I managed was 27,868 on the last attempt.

I did about 29000 (I got Frankfurt and Stuttgart confused and Vilnius killed me because of the weird thing they do with the map)

I got depressed when I landed 7 miles from Bilboa on the first attempt, presumable everybody was killed :(

I do remember seeing something similar which has two versions: one that asks Europeans for locations of countries, cities and rivers in Europe, and one based on American states, cities and rivers for U.S. players. The idea was to see who knew their “local” geography better. I think the Americans came slightly ahead on average. See here:

Being a little easy on our American cousins, I think. Most people are taught the geography of their own country a fair bit at school but not necessarily the surrounding neighbourhood.

Add to that. you’ve got a nice crisp map of the USA and one of Europe that looks like it’s been left out in the rain! :)

I did pretty well with the USA questions, apart from St Louis, which I thought should be close to New Orleans and isn’t.

Cool link, thanks:) I had fun doing this test for good 20 mins:D

Reminds me of my school times. We had to learn the world map, by heart for history classes (with the idea behind being that when you don’t know geography, you won’t understand history). And we had a little 5 min. test at the beginning of every lesson. Hated it at the time, but now I’m glad our teacher was so strict:)

Pawel: No, I fear there are just rugged Basque hills now littered with the grisly spilled contents of a 737. My days of pushing tin are over, my nerve has gone.

That Lufthansa test was a lot of fun, and scored with surprising strictness! Or perhaps not surprising, considering that it’s sponsored by a German airline. On Round #3, locating destinations on the unmarked European landmass, I was also surprised that I located Minsk, one of the destinations, only 26 miles from its rightful place. Fourth-grade geography comes in handy.
